What’s Toffee Anyway?

Toffee is the ultimate crunchy candy.  Toffee comes to life when sugar and butter melt together and heat until they turn golden and crispy through a process of candy making. Toffee happens when the mixture reaches the "hard crack" stage at 300°F.   This is when the magic happens in the pot.  Then you allow it to cool before breaking it into chunks of candy.     We make some of the best Almond Toffee that is available in our store.   If you don't want to make your own then try some of ours.

Toffee vs. Caramel – What’s the Deal?

Although toffee and caramel might seem similar at first glance they are distinctly different candies. Caramel becomes creamier and thicker since its recipe includes milk or cream and requires heating at a lower temperature. Toffee is different from caramel because of its distinct crunchy and crispy texture.

What’s In Toffee?

Butter melting in a pot to make almond toffee

You need just five basic ingredients for this recipe which you likely already have at home:

  1. Butter
  2. Sugar
  3. Salt
  4. Chocolate chips
  5. Almonds or any other ingredient like peanuts, walnuts or even pretzels.

- To achieve the ideal texture for your toffee you need to use four sticks of butter.
- The recipe calls for two cups of sugar because this amount provides enough sweetness to make your heart dance with joy.
- A small amount of salt helps moderate the sweetness while highlighting the flavors.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips turn into a dense chocolate layer when melted.
- The almonds add a delightful crunch to your toffee.

How to Make This Awesome Toffee

This easy step-by-step guide shows you how to make your new favorite candy.

1. Heat the butter until melted in a saucepan before adding sugar and a pinch of salt to the mix.
2. Heat everything until it boils and continue cooking until the mixture turns a beautiful dark amber color at 300 to 310°F. This is when the magic happens.
3. Spread the hot toffee evenly across a baking sheet.  We like to use 18x26 baking sheets
4. Add chocolate chips to the hot toffee and wait until they soften before spreading them out evenly.
5. Spread your almonds or preferred nuts across the top and refrigerate until the mixture cools.
